Back in the Saddle

I'm taking piano lessons again! "Again" meaning I haven't since I was sixteen.

I'm really learning how much I don't know. Andrea, my new teacher, is a perfectionist. When I play a song I've been working on all week, she stops me after two measures and tells me six things wrong with my playing. She's right, of course, but it's still intimidating. After being stopped several times through Debussy's First Arabesque, I told her I was afraid to play any more. My hands got clumsy and I made more mistakes than was really necessary. I just need to get a thicker skin. When I fixed all those problems (it took a few weeks), the song sounded much, much better.

I am loving the practicing. I look forward to it. Dalton watched me the other day and said, "YOU are the one that loves the piano. I hate it. Now that you're taking lessons, we shouldn't have to any more." He does have a point, but he still has to keep taking lessons for a few more years.

  1. Good for you! I have never had piano lessons, and am a little too intimidated to try it. But we have a piano now, so I should. So, good for you! Keep at it!

  2. I am so jealous! I have been wanting to take up piano again, but I just can't afford it right now...maybe someday when Aidan is done....and Bronwen's jump serve is impressive! Serving was my major weakness, I never learned properly and my varsity coach never took the time to teach me...I miss playing volleyball too!
    Go Bronwen!

  3. Good for you Erin! Seems like you have a good teacher; the tougher, the better. I so miss to play the piano! We had to throw our old one away when we sold the house. But I know my dad truly misses to play as well and he constantly talks about buying a new one. Maybe it's a family family characteristic? My grandma is really good at playing the piano and I think Rut was as well.
